What to write in a coworker birthday card

Pick your group, use their name, and sign.

Close colleague

  • Happy birthday. You are one of the best parts of this job.

  • Today you get to pick where we go for lunch. No arguments from me.

  • Happy birthday. I would say take the day off but then who would I complain to?

  • Another year of putting up with me. That deserves more than a card, honestly.

  • Happy birthday. Same time next year, same terrible office cake.

Friendly but not close

  • Happy birthday. Hope the day is a good one.

  • Wishing you a proper birthday, not just a desk visit and a quick sing.

  • Happy birthday. You make this floor a better place to work.

  • Hope today involves something better than a Tuesday usually does.

From a manager

  • Happy birthday. It is a real pleasure having you on the team.

  • Wishing you a brilliant birthday. Thank you for everything you bring to this job.

  • Happy birthday. Take a proper lunch break today, that is an order.

  • You make the team better. Today we take five minutes to say so. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday. The work will still be here tomorrow. Today is yours.

From someone who barely knows them

  • Happy birthday from across the office.

  • Wishing you a great day. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday. Hope it is a good one.

  • Happy birthday from the team.

Funny

  • Happy birthday. HR said we had to, but we mean it.

  • Another year older, same parking spot. Congratulations.

  • Happy birthday. The good biscuits are out and you had nothing to do with it.

  • We all signed this before nine. Some of us needed a reminder. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday. The decorations went up this morning. Nobody volunteered.

What to leave out

Do not mention their age. Most people did not ask to count birthdays at work, in front of colleagues who will still be there next year.

Avoid messages that could be for anyone. If you could copy it from a card in a petrol station, it is not worth writing.

No jokes about getting older. They did not choose to have a birthday at work, and the slowing-down jokes stopped being funny the first time.

Keep it short. A wall of text in a birthday card tells the reader you had no idea what to say and kept going anyway.

One card from the whole team

One link goes round, the card opens on their birthday, and they read it on their phone.

  1. 01

Set their birthday as the open date.

The card stays sealed until that morning. No accidental spoilers.

  2. 02

Send the link to everyone signing.

Each person writes their own message in a browser. No app, no account needed.

  3. 03

They open it on the day.

Every name and every wish. They keep it.

Pick a design

  • Marker lettering with a highlighter stroke. Happy birthday. We've eaten your cake already.
  • An office chair. Happy birthday. Put your feet up. Not on the desk.
  • Balloons. We tied them to the gate. The gate looks festive.
  • Cheers. Clink it like you mean it. Happy birthday, you.
  • A wrapped present. Happy birthday from everyone. Some of us needed a reminder.
  • Marker lettering with a highlighter stroke. Happy birthday from all of us. Some of us signed it twice.
  • Out with friends. Birthday coffee counts double. Those are the rules.
  • A pot plant. Happy birthday to whoever keeps the office plant alive.
  • A balloon, gone soft. Happy birthday. We blew this up this morning.
  • Marker lettering with a highlighter stroke. Happy birthday. Stay exactly as you are. Maybe tidier.

Questions

What do you write in a coworker birthday card when you do not know them well?

Keep it short and warm. 'Happy birthday, hope it is a good one' is honest and fine. A short message beats a long one that sounds copied.

Is it better to be funny or sincere in a work birthday card?

Sincere if you mean it, funny if you know them well enough. A joke that lands needs context. When in doubt, name one good thing about working with them.

Should everyone on the team sign a coworker birthday card?

Yes, if you can. A card with a dozen names feels different from one with three. Even a few words from someone they rarely work with count.

Somebody has a day coming up.
