Maternity leave card.
What to write.

Say you will miss them, say one thing they are good at, and wish them a boring last week. Three sentences is plenty.

Below are maternity leave messages for the card that goes round the office, sorted by who is signing it. The team card itself is one link, and it opens on their last day.

Maternity leave card messages

Pick one, change a detail so it is true of them, and sign it.

Short

  • Go and have a baby. We will keep your chair warm.

  • Enjoy the leave. The inbox will still be here, and so will we.

  • See you on the other side of the sleepless bit.

  • Rest first, then everything else. Congratulations from all of us.

  • You have earned every minute of this. Off you go.

  • The desk is yours whenever you want it back. No hurry.

From a colleague

  • I will miss your face at the ten o'clock meeting and the biscuits you kept in the second drawer. Have a wonderful leave.

  • Nobody else laughs at my spreadsheets. Come back when you are ready and not a day before.

  • You covered for me twice this year without being asked. Let us cover for you now.

  • The kitchen rota will fall apart without you. That is the only complaint.

  • Six months of no standups. I am jealous and delighted for you in equal parts.

  • Send a photo when you can, and ignore the group chat until then.

From a manager

  • Thank you for handing over so carefully. The team is in good shape because of you.

  • Your job is here and it is yours. Take the time you are owed and do not check email.

  • You ran the hardest quarter we have had and then packed a hospital bag. Go and rest.

  • We will send the big news round when you say we can, and not before.

  • The work will keep. The baby will not. See you when you are back.

For a close colleague

  • I have watched you plan this for months. Now let the plan look after you for a bit.

  • Ring me at three in the morning if you need to. I mean it.

  • You are going to be very good at this, and very tired. Both are fine.

  • Lunch is on me the first week you feel like leaving the house.

  • We have a drawer of your snacks and a chair by the window ready for the first visit.

Second or third baby

  • You have done this before, which means you know to sleep now while you can.

  • Two under three. We are impressed, slightly frightened for you, and here if you need us.

  • The first one already runs the house. Good luck to the new one.

  • Same team, one more player. Enjoy the leave.

What not to write

Do not guess at the baby's name, the date or the sex. The card is often read out loud, and a wrong guess sits there in ink.

Do not mention the handover, the return date or who is covering. Those are for the manager, in a meeting, not the card.

Do not write anything about how hard it will be. They know. Write the thing you would say if they were standing in front of you.

One card from the whole team

Set the last day, send one link, and it opens for them that morning.

  1. 01

    Add the date.

Their last day before leave. The card opens that morning and not before.

  2. 02

    Choose who to ask.

The team, the floor, or everyone. Each person gets one link and writes once.

  3. 03

    Everyone writes their own words.

Signed, in their own hand. The person on leave reads it on their phone.

Create a card

Pick a design

  • A set of car keys. You were the only one who knew where the spare keys were.
  • Marker lettering with a highlighter stroke. It's not the same without you. It's quieter, mainly.
  • Two-colour printed lettering. The new lot don't know how lucky they are.
  • Marker lettering with a highlighter stroke. You made Mondays less bad. Not good. Less bad.
  • Marker lettering with a highlighter stroke. We had a whip-round. It came to £11.40 and a button.
  • A cake. Bye. Thanks for everything. Mostly the cake.
  • Marker lettering. Jealous you're leaving. "Sorry" is crossed out and "Jealous" written above it.
  • A mug. You're leaving us for a place with a better kettle.
  • A printer. Who's going to fix the printer now?
  • A pot plant. The office plant will miss you. It told us.

Questions

When should the card go round?

Start it a week before the last day. People are away, and a card signed by four people out of twelve reads as an oversight.

Who signs a maternity leave card?

The team they work with day to day, their manager, and anyone they have covered for. A wider circle can sign if the card is online, because there is no desk to walk it to.

Do we say congratulations or good luck?

Both are fine. Congratulations is for the baby, good luck is for the leave. Say one and mean it rather than both out of habit.

Is it maternity leave or parental leave?

Use the words the person uses. Many teams say parental leave for a partner's leave and maternity leave for the person giving birth. Ask if unsure.
