Five years.
What to write, and when.

Five years is the first anniversary people actually notice. Say the number, say one thing that changed because they were there, and sign it.

The calculator below gives the day it falls and how long they have been here to the day. The messages under it are written for year five, not for any year.

Five year messages

Pick one, change a detail so it is true of them, and sign.

Short

  • Five years. Thank you for every one of them.

  • Half a decade in and still the first to reply. Happy anniversary.

  • Five years today. The place is better for it.

  • Happy fifth. Here is to the next five, if you will have us.

  • Five years, and you still read the whole thread before answering. Thank you.

For a colleague

  • Five years ago you sat down next to me and asked where the good mugs were. I still do not know, but I am glad you stayed.

  • You have outlasted three reorganisations and two coffee machines. Happy five years.

  • Five years of you fixing things before anybody knew they were broken. Thank you.

  • Happy anniversary. Half of what I know about this job I learned by watching you.

  • Five years. You are the reason Monday standup runs on time and I will not pretend otherwise.

  • Five years in and you are still the person I would want in the room when something goes wrong.

From a manager

  • Five years ago we hired you for one job and you have done four since. Thank you for all of them.

  • You have trained more of this team than I have. Happy five years, and thank you.

  • Five years is long enough to have seen the worst of this place and stayed anyway. That means a great deal.

  • Happy anniversary. The account you kept in year two is still the one that pays for the rest.

  • Five years, and the handover notes you wrote in your first month are still the ones we give new starters.

From the team

  • Five years of you. We counted. Happy anniversary from all of us.

  • You have carried this team through five years and at least four crises. Thank you.

  • Half a decade of your questions in the meeting nobody else would ask. Do not stop.

  • Five years today. Cake is in the kitchen and the card is from everyone.

Why five is the one people mark

One year is a milestone for the person. Five is a milestone for the company, because most people have moved on by then and the ones still here are the ones holding it together.

It is also the year people start to be asked whether they are staying. A card signed by the whole team on the day answers a question nobody has to ask.

Ten is bigger, but fewer people get there. Five is the one to get right, and the one most teams forget.

The years around it

What each milestone tends to mean, and the message that fits it.

YearWhat it meansThe message
1They stayed past the point most people decideName the thing they got good at
2They know where everything isName the thing you now ask them
5They are part of the furniture, in the good senseName the change they made
10They have trained the people who trained the new peopleName who they taught
20They are the memory of the placeSay what would be lost without them

One card from the whole team, on the day

Set the date once, and the card opens that morning.

  1. 01

    Add the date.

Their first day, or the anniversary. The card opens on it and not before.

  2. 02

    Choose who to ask.

The team, the floor, or the people they trained. Each gets one link.

  3. 03

    Everyone writes their own words.

Signed, in their own hand. They read it on their phone and keep it.

Questions

What do you get for a 5 year work anniversary?

Ask what they would like rather than guess. If the company gives a set gift at five years, the card is the part that is actually theirs, so make that the good bit.

Is a 5 year work anniversary a big deal?

Bigger than most teams treat it. It is the first year where staying was a choice made several times over, and the people who reach it are usually the ones holding the team together.

When exactly is the anniversary?

Five years from their first working day, not from the offer or the contract date. The calculator above counts it from the date you enter.

Do we celebrate on the day or at the next team meeting?

On the day if you can, because it is a date and dates are the point. A card that opens that morning does this for you when the team is remote.

Somebody has a day coming up.
