- Nurses Week card
Nurses Week card.
What to write.
Name one shift, one patient, or one thing they do that nobody else would. Quotes from Florence Nightingale are fine; something true about this nurse is better.
The messages are sorted by who is signing: a manager, a colleague on the same unit, someone from another department, and a patient's family member.

You asked for the hardest bay again last Tuesday. I noticed.
Nobody reads a room faster than you. I have learned from watching.
Happy Nurses Week. Your reputation across the building says everything.
Nurses Week messages for the card
Pick one, change the detail so it fits this nurse, and sign it.
From a manager
Thank you for the handovers you write so the next shift starts clean. That takes discipline, and it matters.
You have trained three new nurses this year without complaint. The unit is better because of it.
Nurses Week is one week. What you do is every week. Thank you.
You asked for the hardest bay again last Tuesday. I noticed.
Thank you for staying late on Thursday. You did not have to, and the patient knew it.
From a colleague on the unit
Thank you for taking the call when I had my hands full. You always do.
Nobody reads a room faster than you. I have learned from watching.
You are the reason the night shift hands over with everything done.
Thank you for the biscuits, the dark humour, and the steady pair of hands on the bad days.
You told me the job would get easier and then stayed to show me how.
From another department
Every time we call your unit, somebody calm picks up. I think that somebody is usually you.
Thank you for the patience when our requests were not as clear as they should have been.
You make the ward feel like a place people are looked after. That comes from somewhere, and it is you.
Happy Nurses Week. Your reputation across the building says everything.
From a patient's family
You remembered her name every single morning. That is not a small thing.
Thank you for explaining the same thing twice without making us feel like we had asked too many times.
We left him in your care and felt better for it. Thank you.
You held her hand when we could not be there. We have not forgotten.
The doctor answered the questions we asked. You answered the ones we were too scared to ask.
Short
Happy Nurses Week. Thank you for the work nobody sees.
Thank you. The ward runs because you do.
Happy Nurses Week. You are very good at a very hard job.
Thank you for this year.
What not to write
Do not open with a quote from a famous nurse unless it says something true about this person, this ward and this particular year. A printed quote fills space. A sentence about Tuesday fills a card.
Do not write about how hard nursing is. They know. Write about the specific thing they do well.
Do not make it about the whole profession and forget the person. This card has their name on it.
Do not end with 'you are a hero'. They hear it every May and it lands flat. Say the thing they actually did.
One card from the whole team
Set the date, send one link, and it opens on the first day of Nurses Week.
- 01
Add the date.
The first day of Nurses Week, or the day of the celebration. The card opens that morning.
- 02
Choose who to ask.
The unit, the department, the whole floor. Each person gets one link and writes once.
- 03
They read every message.
Signed, in each person's own words. One card, not a chain of texts they forget by lunch.
Questions
When should a Nurses Week card go round?
Start it three or four days before Nurses Week opens. People are on rotating shifts, and a card signed by six out of twenty reads as an afterthought.
Who signs a Nurses Week card?
The team they work with, their manager, and anyone whose shift they have covered. A wider group can sign if the card is online, because there is no desk to walk it to.
What is the difference between a quote and a message for a nurse?
A quote is something someone else said. A message names this nurse and this year. The message is what they keep.
Somebody has a day coming up.
