- Retirement farewell speech
Farewell speech for a retiring employee.
What to say.
The speech needs one specific memory, one real thank you, and a line that lands. Five minutes is enough.
The lines are sorted by who is speaking: their manager, a long-standing peer, someone they managed, and the wider team.

Thank you for making it easy to manage you. Some people never do.
We have sat three desks apart for years. Monday is going to feel wrong.
The reason I am still here is partly them. They would not say that, so I will.
Lines for the speech and the card
Pick your group, change the detail so it is true of them, and say it out loud before you stand up.
You were their manager
The thing about them is they always knew when to push back and when to let it go. I never had to explain the difference.
I hired them for the skills on the CV. I kept them for everything that was not on it.
Not one day in this building where they made the job harder for anyone around them. That is rarer than it sounds.
We are a better team than when they arrived. That is the whole speech, really.
I am going to miss the answer they gave before I had finished asking the question.
Thank you for making it easy to manage you. Some people never do.
You worked alongside them
We have sat three desks apart for years. Monday is going to feel wrong.
The thing nobody tells you about a long career is how much of it you spend next to the same person. I got lucky with mine.
Ask anyone on this floor what they are good at and you will get a different answer. That is not a flaw.
They covered for me more times than I counted, and never once made me feel the debt.
The decade I have worked next to them taught me more about this job than any course I have been sent on.
They were your manager
The first piece of advice they gave me was to slow down. I still think about it every week.
A good manager teaches you something you did not know you needed. They did that every year.
They could have made this job small. They made it big. That is what I will carry.
I came in nervous and they noticed. They did not make a thing of it. That mattered more than they know.
The reason I am still here is partly them. They would not say that, so I will.
Speaking on behalf of the team
Everyone in this room has a story about being bailed out by them. The stories are different. The feeling is the same.
Replacing them is not something we plan to attempt. We will fill the seat. That is different.
The team asked me to say the coffee invitations are not optional.
We kept this short because they would be embarrassed by anything longer. They know what they did.
The office runs the way it does partly because of them. We will keep that going.
Card lines
Monday is just a day now. Enjoy it.
Thank you for the years. The seat will not be the same.
The best part of working here was you. That does not stop being true.
Go and have the time you have been owed for years.
We will manage. We always do. But it will not be the same without you.
What to leave out
Do not list every role they have held since they joined. The CV is not the speech, and nobody came to hear it read back.
Do not say you know you speak for everyone. You are at the microphone, so just say the thing.
Do not do the age joke unless you know for certain they will laugh. It is the easiest line in the room and the most likely to land badly.
Do not mention money, the pension, or anything about terms. That conversation happened elsewhere.
One card from the whole team
Set the last day, send one link, and it is there when the speeches are done.
- 01
Set it to open on their last day.
The card is ready before the room fills. They have something to read after the speeches.
- 02
Send one link to the team.
Each person writes their own line, signed with their name. No chasing a physical card round the building.
- 03
They keep it.
Every line, every name, on their phone. The speeches are forgotten. The card is not.
Questions
How long should a farewell speech be for a retiring employee?
Three to five minutes. Long enough to say the real thing, short enough that people are still listening when you say it.
What if you did not know them well?
One true thing about what they did and a genuine wish for the retirement. You do not need a story. You need to mean it.
Should a retirement farewell speech be funny?
One warm joke is fine if it is about something they chose, not something they cannot change. Aim for the room to laugh once and mean it.
